Suffering From Adult Acne? You Need To Read This First!

By: Linda Hayes

Acne is no longer only a symptoms of teenagers going through puberty. Adult acne affects more than 25% of the total population of both sexes. It also seems to affect women more seriously in most cases. About half of the population goes through periods in their lives where they have bad skin, so you are not alone here!

If you have mild to moderate cases of adult acne, you can ahead and treat it like normal teenager's acne. Acne caused by over-active oil glands requires similar treatment. For more serious cases of adult acne caused by imbalance of hormones, stress or unhealthy lifestyles, the following treatments are available.

According to a study by dermatologist Alan Shalita, more than 50% of the female population are affected by acne flares-up around the time of their periods. Women also experience more breakouts in their pregnancy and menopause besides before their menstrual cycles. Traditional therapy for teenager's acne usually doesn't respond well with these cases.

Symptoms of hormonal acne includes increased breakouts preceding the menstrual cycle, a history of irregular menstrual cycles, increased facial oiliness, increased of certain androgens in bloodstream. This type of hormonal acne is most persistent for women over 30 and usually begins in their 20s. A myriad of these patients experience lesions on their lower face, especially on their neck and jawline. Most have breakouts exclusively on their faces while some of them have blemishes on their chests and backs as well.

If you have moderate to severe cases of adult acne, I suggest you not to bother with the over-the-counter products and go straight to the dermatologist. Small dosage birth contraceptives is one of the common treatments of hormonal adult acne. Your dermatologist would usually prescribe some more of topical medications in combinations with the pills also.

Adult acne often are even more severe than their teenage counterparts, sometimes with the developing of cysts. Try to keep your stress level low (I know it's hard) and get at least 8 hours of sleep a day. I'm not just saying it but a healthier lifestyle DOES have a positive effect on your skin conditions. Also, a common mistake I see alot of people make is they use products that are too strong and aggressive. Often this may backfires as your skin over-reacts to defend its own moisture level, causing even more oil production.
