Selecting The Best Pressure Washer For You

By: Matt Wright

Perhaps you are perplexed - there are just SO MANY different types of pressure washers available today - how do you choose the right one? We'd like to help you choose the best pressure washer for your needs.

Where should you start? Perhaps the best place is to begin by thinking about how often you will need to clean with your pressure washer. Will it be once a week or less? Then you can probably get by with one designed for residential or homeowner use. If you will need to do your cleaning several times a week, you need a unit that can handle the workload - and that may mean a commercial unit.

Also: Consider just what you will be cleaning with your new pressure washer. Will you need to tackle surfaces that are grease or oil-covered? Then you should look into purchase of a steam pressure washer - the steam is really effective in cutting through that greasy gunk. At the very minimum, you will need a pressure washer that heats the water - a cheaper model that uses room temperature water will not be effective on grease and oil.

If you are interested in cleaning stuff around the home - such as your deck, or automobile - will find that they will not need a very high-pressure unit. One that develops under 2000 PSI should work just fine on those surfaces.

On the other hand, if you are going to be cleaning things like the brickwork of your home, or a large truck, then you will need a pressure washer that develops a medium pressure of around 2000-3000 PSI.

What about pressure washers that pack a real wallop - they deliver over 3000 PSI? They are for use (primarily) in industrial environments - although some residential users may have a need for them.

In general, the advantage to buying a commercial-grade pressure is that you will have a longer-lasting unit, made with quality components, and a good warranty. Keeping your budget in mind, you should try to buy the very best unit that you can.

A few final recommendations: Don't forget to ask about how your unit will be serviced if it breaks down. Also, make sure that you buy all of the accessories that you will need - many are available, and may not be sold with the unit, but must be purchased separately. Finally, follow safe practices: wear goggles, be careful of hot water, and NEVER point the nozzle at others.
