Is Beauty Subjective? Or Does The Society Define It?

By: Beau-Xpert

The latest advertisements are targeting our young, claims Dove, in there beauty campaigns. The wrong concept of beauty that these companies promote must be stopped, is another concept that Dove is pushing.

The issue being brought up is definitely important - does the society define beauty? The media? Or does each individual? An even more important issue is that of the effects of being labeled 'not beautiful'.

There are three schools of thought on this issue:

1. Society defines beauty and as it changes over time, so does the idea of what is beautiful:

a. What is the driving force behind this 'change'? If it is a group of people who happen to be able to dictate such issues due to their position, then this is no different than racism and the doctrine of Nicolaitans (Revelations 3). Unfortunately, this is the view most of the media today subscribes to.

b. The effects of this 'change in perspective' is promoting depression, unhealthy habits, and even suicide.

c. It is not as much as the idea of beauty, but the concept of what is 'valuable and desirable' that is changing. This also results in otherwise beautiful people feeling not-upto-par unless they buy what the specific advertisement is peddling.

2. The concept of beauty is the same as before, but is now out in the open due to technology - While this has some shades of truth to it, there are debatable aspects to this too:

a. As before, a small number of people are the ones who define what goes, rather than the objective truth.

b. If the concept of beauty has always been the same, then why are 'impossible' and unhealthy figures that have never been considered normal or beautiful until now being peddled as such today?

c. While there are aspects of this that are true, such as obesity, wrinkles and skin blemishes always being considered a certain way, this small definition cannot be applied across the board.

3. Subjective opinion of each individual - This is currently regarded to be the best possible explanation. Following are the discussion points related to this.

An obvious implication of this view is that every person desires to be 'more beautiful', but for a certain someone, not for everyone in the public. This makes sense in the context of marriage, for example, where a husband and wife try to be as pleasing for each other as possible.
