Determining Your Niche As A Personal Trainer

By: Darrin Nicoli

Niche ; n - a place, employment, status, or activity for which a person or thing is best fitted. OR - a specialized market

The problem that many new personal trainers have is that they see what the masses of other personal trainers are doing around them, and they do the same. I mean, why not? If that's what everyone else is doing it must be right, right?

Well, if you want to be like everyone else, then you're right. If you want to build a relatively small business and be just another personal trainer, you are right.

BUT, if you want to stand out from the crowd and be known as the expert in your field, if you want to build a business empire, than you are going about it all wrong.

Have you ever heard the saying:

"Jack of all trades, Master of none"

That's the perception you are giving your potential clients if you are marketing yourself as just another personal trainer. And, if you don't have a niche, that is exactly what you are marketing yourself as.

And even if your business seems to be growing, I can assure you that your business will grow by leaps and bounds when you determine what your niche is and market yourself accordingly.

When you need someone to look at a knee injury, do you go to a general practioner? Or do you go to an Ortopedic Specialist?

The general practitioner knows what he's doing, but I would bet you would choose the Specialist over the "general" practitioner.

So, what is your niche?

Your niche should be:
· Something that you are knowledgeable about
· Something that you are passionate about
· Something that your market area calls for
· Something that will make you money

Something that you are knowledgeable about

If you are going to market yourself as the Expert in your field, you must have an in-depth knowledge of the area you will be marketing. Your reputation is all you have as a personal trainer and "faking it" will certainly destroy that reputation faster than anything else.

Something that you are passionate about

If you don't love what you're doing, if you don't have a passion for it, your success as a personal trainer will be limited. When working within a certain niche your passion will emanate to your customers and become contagious. They will become passionate about it as well, which increases word of mouth marketing for you.

Something that your market area calls for

To be successful, there must be a demand for what you are supplying. If you are a personal trainer in Alaska, for example, you certainly would not want your niche to be Bikini Beach Workouts. Unless you are planning on marketing your niche as an online product, you must do your research and be sure there is a market for it in YOUR AREA.

Something that makes you money

Let's be honest: We do what we do to be successful financially. We may have a passion for being a personal trainer and helping others reach their goals, but we may as well get paid well for providing a great service. Make sure you are able to create a steady stream of income within your niche market

So, what is your niche?
· Weight Loss Specialist
· Athletic Improvement Specialist
· Personal Trainer Specializing In Post-Birth Fitness Training
· Personal Trainer Specializing In Knee Injury Rehabilitation
· Group Exercise Aerobic Instructor
· Power Lifting Specialist
· Boot Camp Instuctor
· And the list goes on...

Your niche could very well be doing exactly what it is you are doing right now, you just need to list it as your specialty and market it.
If you are a boot camp instructor, be a Personal Trainer Specializing In Fitness Boot Camps. Not a Personal Trainer and oh, by the way, I also do boot camps...

Take the time to think about what your niche is. Make sure it fits the criteria listed above. Once you have settled on your niche (and it could be more than one thing) MARKET IT.
