What is Wu Xing or the Five Elements? Wu Xing means Five Movement or Five Transformation. It refers to the five forms of energy or ‘qi’ that has properties similar to the elements of metal, wood, water, fire and earth. For this reason it is also know that the Five Elements.

What are the Heavenly Stems? Chinese timekeeping is based on the Heavenly Stems and Earth Branches. Every year, month, day and hour can be represented by a stem and branch. The Stem (and the branch) denotes the type of cosmic (and earthly) energy present at the time.

What is the difference between Yin and Yang water? Yin water is still (like water in a vase) while Yang water is active and flowing e.g. river.

What are the characteristics of the element water? The energy of water is falling. It is also stillness or resting, has no form or wavy. It is also to do with money or wealth.

What is the HeTu or (Yellow) River Map? Emperor Fu Xi saw a pattern on the back of a dragon house that emerged from the Yellow River. The pattern inspired the Early Heaven arrangement and is today known as the He Tu or River Map.

What is the Yin and Yang? Yin and Yang are two primary forces of nature. Yin is the direct opposite of Yang. Both are needed and neither is superior or more important to the other. For example Yin is soft and passive while Yang is hard and active.

Give examples of Yang and Yin Fire. The Sun is an example of Yang Fire. The moon on the other hand is Yin Fire. A bushfire is yang Fire with a candle is Yin Fire.

How many arrangements are there of the Eight Trigram? Technical 8 factorial arrangements! In practice only two arrangements matters. They are the Early Heaven (Xian Tian) and Later Heaven (Hou Tian) arrangements.
