Be Prepared For The Drink-Thirsty Guests With Plenty Of Barware

A well stocked bar means having the proper equipment. There are over 20 different types of glassware to fit both the needs and the presentation of fine alcohol beverages. Many types of bar ware are designed and utilized for one type of drink.

Champaign can be served in both a flute and a saucer which are designed specifically for Champaign. A flute is a tall, stemmed wine glass that is used for Champaign cocktails and creamy up drinks such as Brandy Alexander. A Champaign saucer is a short stemmed glass with a wide bowl. A slight variation is the Tulip, which is named for the flower it resembles, is also referred to as a poco glass. The tulip is bowl shaped at the bottom, contours in and flutes out at the top. Both wines and brandies are served with this glass.

A cordial glass, also known as a liqueur glass is a small stemmed glass used for sipping after dinner drinks. Fruit spirits are also traditionally served in this type of glass.

A stemmed glass with sloping sides, ideal for serving drinks without ice or with fruit garnishes is a cocktail glass. A martini is the signature drink.

Highball glasses are tall, but shorter than a beer schooner. A highball glass is used mostly for serving a spirit and mixer. Often whiskey or other hard alcohol drinkers will request a tall or double to be served.

Steins are fancy mugs that bulge at the bottom, are narrower at the top and have a handle. This mug is used for serving beers and ales. A metal version, often with a hinge cover, are designed to give the impress that the mug was created during the mid evil time period.

Brandy & cognac are enjoyed from a snifter. This balloon shaped glass with a short stem is bigger at the bottom and used for sipping. It allows you to sniff the aromas of your drink for full enjoyment.

Other beer and ale mainstays are the schooner, pilsner, and mug. The schooner is a tall glass that is narrower at the bottom and slightly wider at the top. The pilsner is tall, tapered and used primarily for high carbonated light beers and pilsners while the mug is a heavy handled glass.

White and red wines have their own stemmed glass design. The oval shaped bowl used for white wine is smaller than the round, tapered bowl that is used for reds. Sherry, a fortified wine, is served from a very short stemmed glass and used for after dinner drinks. It is also perfect for aperitifs, ports and other dessert wines.

With so many glasses, it can be a very confusing question when someone asks for a good old fashioned glass! This short glass with a heavy base is used to serve whiskey and sweet vermouth and drinks served with ice. This is also referred to as a tumbler. It differs from the lowball, a short footed glass, which is used to serve stirred cocktails with ice. It is commonly utilized for Bloody Marys and drinks that contain alcohol with a large amount of mix.

A margarita has its own namesake glass which is actually a coupette. The coupette is stemmed and has a very narrow base that rises and opens to a large top diameter.

A shot glass, also used for measuring drinks, is a whiskey glass that hold 1.5 oz for straight shots as well. In a pinch, the shot glass can replace the jigger.

Hurricane glasses are another glass named after the drink it most commonly carries. Most of your tropical drinks are served from this version. It resembles a large tulip.

Another tumbler is the Rocks glass. This holds a few ounces and is used to serve a drink on the rocks and sometimes serves as a shot glass. It only varies from the old fashioned version by being tapered on the bottom.
