I still feel like a little boy within. I have a difficult time looking in the mirror and recognizing a real adult. I might have thought the birth of my 2nd child might have altered it, yet I still appear to be in denial of the aging process.

Speaking of aging — or rather fighting it off — my wife and I recently moved into a brand new house and this house features enough room in the basement for the home gym my wife has always wanted. Of course, I am seeing dollar signs when I consider all the large and tiny things necessary, from the required but oft-forgotten weight-lifting benches and exercise mats to deciding on the best exercise bike.

Stationary bicycles can be tricky now a days. Do I go with an upright or a recumbent stationary bike? Should I go with an electronic or analog?

Of course, my wife appears determined to get one of those elliptical trainers as well. You understood that right. A stationary bicycle and an elliptical machine — not one or the other. My estimate is that the extra exercise equipment will go with the cream for stretch marks she began utilizing after she bore our youngest child. I’m sure I’ll regret that joke.

I have to be particular with the budget because our new house is a bit more of a diamond in the rough. We wanted it this way, but we still must carefully budget every little thing, down to the cabinet knobs (I’m not jesting). My wife has an ambitious cabinet refacing project projected, but must remind her the sinks for the bathrooms she wants put in shall cost a fair amount, as well.

Thankfully, she and I both enjoy the rustic, organic style, so we’re furnishing our new home with unfinished furniture. It still requires a little finishing, but she and I can keep the costs down and create better furniture than we could purchase anywhere anyways.

I recently found a great with some nice, natural knotting and a entryway table in matching oak. For our patio we’re exploring an outdoor fireplace and we’ll go with some budget furniture made with wicker to start.

Furnishing a new home may appear so adult, but I cannot help but sense I am merely playing house. The exercise equipment and furniture just feel like a new era of toys.
